“We are already being constrained by the explosion of creation,” the old man said. His skin was patchy and wrinkled, and cataracts clouded his eyes. He shifted his grip on his walking stick.
“Nonsense.”
“No. It is not. The effects are barely noticeable now. Except you are getting so used to your status quo that no one will want to change for the better.”
“With so much variation, I doubt that.”
“Ah, but the variation only serves as a confusing mess. Every variant may improve on its predecessor, but with the number of variants then no ultimate form is ever possible: there is nothing to unify the best of each. The result is that nobody wants to elect a change.”
“Everybody wants change.”
“True. Except they point out the problems with what we have now. Watch them when they come to pick a solution.” At this point the old man hobbled away, his walking stick clacking.

“What have you done to bring about reform?” asked the nurse. He was stocky and epitomized the working class.
“I played an important role in the broadcasting revolution.”
“Well now they get to see more of the sensationalism that reinforces a false view of the world they will never see again. Congratulations.”
A brief silence followed, and a review of the surroundings.

“The system has become too old. It is filled with traditions that are only excess baggage,” commented a visitor. He was young and well dressed.
“Yet those traditions have served well.”
“How do we know what is serving us well until we see the alternatives?”
“The traditions are what hold society together. We need them or it will collapse. Drastic change could be very detrimental.”
“Yes.”
Confused, attention was diverted elsewhere.

“Nobody cares anymore,” sighed the manager, “it is too expensive.”
“What is?”
“Maintaining what has become too old to be useful,” the manager said, brushing lint off a sleeve.
“But people have to care. They are part of it, they will become it, and it supports them.”
“They do not want it. It has done its duty, now they want to get rid of it and live their lives.”
“That is both selfish and irresponsible.”
“Who taught them to be that way?”

A decision was made. Darkness ensued.
I found this little story in a school creative writing portfolio from a few years ago.

It seemed pretty cool at the time. I think about it a bit differently now, but I still like it.

I like this story, I think I got it, it's about turning off the lights on everyone so that you can't see the differences, right? If so it's a good concept, if not, ignore me cuz i don't know what I'm talking about
